5-a-Side Football Game Tactics: Passing, Pressing and Shooting
Small-sided football games are fast. With only four outfield players on each team there is very little space, and the ball changes sides every few seconds. Good players do not run more than everyone else. They make better decisions. Here are the ones that matter most.
Pass early
The most common mistake is holding the ball until a defender arrives. By then your passing lanes are closed. Look for a free team mate as soon as you receive the ball and pass before the pressure reaches you. Two quick passes move the ball further than one long dribble, and they pull defenders out of position.
Use the width
Defenders are drawn to the ball. If you attack down the middle every time, you run into a crowd. Play the ball to a wide player, wait for the defence to shift across, then switch to the other side. The space appears where the defenders just left.
Defend with patience
A slide tackle that misses takes your player out of the game for a moment. Stay between the attacker and your goal, close the distance, and only commit when you are near enough to reach the ball. When the other team has the ball, switch to the player who is closest to it rather than chasing with one who is far away.
Shoot for the corners
Goalkeepers cover the middle of the goal best. A medium shot aimed at a corner beats a hard shot aimed at the keeper. Shoot across the goal when you can: if the keeper pushes the ball away, it often falls to a team mate arriving on the other side.
Play off the boards
Indoor pitches have boards around them and the ball stays in play. Use them. A pass played off the board can go around a defender, and a ball that bounces back from behind the goal is a second chance for an attacker who keeps moving.
Manage your energy
Sprinting all the time leaves you with nothing when you need it. Jog to your position, and save the sprint for a clear run at goal or an urgent recovery in defence.
Keep your special shot for the right moment
Many arcade football games give you a powerful shot that charges up over time. It is wasted from your own half. Wait until you are past the middle of the pitch with a clear view of the goal.
Playing a friend
A human opponent learns your habits. If you always pass to the same side or always shoot early, change it. The best trick against a friend is the simplest one: pretend to do what you did last time, then do something else.
