About Word of the Day
Word of the Day is a free daily word puzzle for your browser. Every day there is one hidden word with five letters, and you have six tries to find it. Type any real five-letter word and press Enter. The tiles change colour to show how close you are: green means the right letter in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different place, and grey means the letter is not in the word at all.
The word is the same for every player on the same day, so you can compare your result with friends. When you finish, press the share button to copy a small grid of coloured squares without spoilers, and post it anywhere. Play every day to build a winning streak, and check your statistics to see how many guesses you usually need.
Want more? After you finish the daily word you can keep playing with extra practice words that do not count towards your stats. There is also an Arabic version of the game with its own daily word.
Tips for guessing the word
- Start with a word that has many common letters, such as vowels and the letters R, S, T, L and N.
- Use your second guess to test new letters instead of repeating the grey ones.
- A letter can appear twice. A yellow and a grey tile of the same letter tell you exactly how many copies there are.
- Think about common endings such as ER, ED, LY and ING-style patterns before you guess.
