Space Shooter Tips: Dodging, Positioning and Boss Fights

In a space shooter you fire at waves of enemies while avoiding their shots. It looks like a game about quick reflexes, but the strongest skill is positioning. These ideas will help in Nova Shield and similar games.

Stay low and centred

Staying near the bottom of the screen gives you the most time to see incoming shots. Staying near the centre gives you the most room to move left or right. Return to the centre after each dodge instead of hiding in a corner.

Dodge by moving a little

Most bullets can be avoided by moving only a small distance. Large movements carry you into other bullets or off a safe spot. Aim to move just enough to let a bullet pass, then settle again.

Learn wave patterns

Enemy waves follow patterns: sweeping arcs, straight lines and diagonal formations. After seeing a wave once, you know where the next enemies will appear. Position yourself for the next wave while you finish the last one.

Prioritise targets

Shoot the enemies that threaten you first, such as the ones closest to the bottom or those that fire the most. Enemies that are far away or moving harmlessly can wait.

Collect upgrades safely

Upgrades and coins fall down the screen. Do not dive into a crowd of bullets to pick one up. Another one usually appears, and your ship is worth more than a single upgrade.

Fighting bosses

A boss has attacks that repeat in a cycle. Use the first cycle to learn the pattern without shooting too much. Notice which spots on the screen are safe during each attack. In later cycles, move to those spots before the attack starts, and fire during the quiet moments.

Power-ups and difficulty

Shields are best saved for bosses. On Hard difficulty, enemies fire faster and in greater numbers, so patience matters even more. Take shorter shots with frequent repositioning rather than holding one spot.
