Gem Matching Game Strategy: Special Gems, Combos and Boss Levels
Gem matching games are easy to start. You swap two neighbouring gems to make a line of three, the line disappears and new gems fall in. Winning harder levels is a different matter, because you have a limited number of moves and a goal to reach. These ideas will help you finish with moves to spare.
1. Read the goal before your first move
A level might ask for a score, for a number of gems of one colour, for ice to be broken, for stones to be smashed or for keys to be brought to the bottom row. Each goal needs different moves. A lovely chain reaction in a corner is worth nothing if the ice is on the other side of the board. Before every swap, ask whether it brings the goal closer.
2. Look for four and five before you take three
A match of three clears three gems. A match of four or more also creates a special gem, which will clear far more later. At the start of each turn, spend a moment looking for a longer match. In Gem Burst the special gems are made like this:
- Four in a row makes a Bomb that blasts the area around it.
- An L or T shape makes a Rocket that fires along its row and column.
- Five in a row makes a Rainbow gem that clears a whole colour.
- Six or more makes a Nova, the strongest gem in the game.
3. Combine special gems
Two special gems swapped with each other do much more than two used separately. A Rainbow gem swapped with a Bomb or a Rocket can clear most of the board in one move. When you have one special gem, try to build a second next to it before you use the first.
4. Choose where on the board to play
A match near the bottom moves every gem above it, so it often starts a chain reaction. That is useful when you need score or many gems. A match near the top changes very little, so it is the safe choice when you have set up a special gem and do not want the board to shuffle it away.
5. Deal with blockers early
Ice, stones and other blockers reduce the space you can play in. A small board gives fewer matches and fewer special gems. Clear blockers in the first half of the level, while you still have moves to recover from bad luck. Rockets are the best tool for blockers at the edges, where normal matches are hard to make.
6. Keys and falling items
When something has to reach the bottom row, only the column under it matters. Clear gems in that column and leave the rest of the board alone. A Rocket fired down that column is the fastest way.
7. Boss levels
A boss has an energy bar and fights back, for example by dropping stones on your board. Two habits help. First, build special gems early and keep one ready, so that you can repair the board straight after the boss acts. Second, do not waste moves on small matches far from anything useful. Every move should either hurt the boss or prepare a special gem.
8. Use helpers late, not early
Helpers such as a hammer, a shuffle or extra moves cost coins. Play the level first. If you reach the last few moves and the goal is close, a helper is good value. If the goal is still far away, save your coins and try the level again with what you have learned.
9. When there is no good move
Sometimes every possible match is poor. Choose the one that changes the board most, usually the lowest one, and hope the new gems help. Do not use a special gem only because nothing else looks interesting.
