Hidden Object Game Tips: Search Smarter and Beat the Clock

Hidden object games give you a crowded scene, a list of things to find and a clock. Good players are not people with better eyesight. They are people who search in an organised way. Here is how to do it.

1. Search for one thing at a time

If your list says spoons, brushes and keys, do not look for all three at once. Pick one. Fix its shape and colour in your mind, then look only for that. Your eyes are very good at finding one known shape and quite bad at finding several. When you have found them all, move to the next item.

2. Start with the item you need most of

An order such as "find 10 spoons" is easier than "find 2 keys", because there are more of them and you will learn what they look like in this scene after the first two or three. Start there. You will also notice the rarer items on the way and can remember where they are.

3. Sweep the scene in order

Move your eyes slowly from one corner to the opposite corner in rows, the way you read a page. Random looking keeps returning to the same bright spots in the middle. A steady sweep covers the edges, where items are often hidden.

4. Think about how things are hidden

Scene designers use the same tricks again and again:

When the easy ones are found, stop looking for the whole object and start looking for a part of it: a handle, a tip, a curve.

5. Be careful with lookalikes

Later levels add decoys that look almost right, such as a fork among the spoons. Tapping one costs time. If something looks nearly correct, take half a second to check the detail that separates it from the real thing.

6. Do not tap wildly

Wrong taps cost time, and several quick mistakes can lock the screen for a moment. Tapping everything in sight is slower than looking properly. Tap only what you have recognised.

7. Build combos

Many games reward finds made quickly one after another. In Hidden Clues a combo adds bonus seconds to the clock. A good way to use this is to locate two or three items with your eyes first, then tap them in a row.

8. Fog, darkness and moving items

Harder scenes add obstacles. When fog or a flock of birds covers part of the scene, search the clear parts and come back later. When you must search with a lantern, move it in the same slow rows as before, so that no area is missed. When items move from place to place, tap them as soon as you recognise them and do not plan ahead.

9. Save hints for the end

The last item is nearly always the hardest, because it is the best hidden one. A hint used on the first item is wasted. Keep your free hints until one or two items remain and time is short.

10. Choose the right difficulty

An easier mode gives more time and larger items. There is no shame in using it to learn the scenes. Move to a harder mode when you finish levels with plenty of time left.
