Word Guessing Game Strategy: Better First Words and Smarter Second Guesses

In a word guessing game you have a few tries to find a hidden word. After each guess the game tells you which letters are in the right place, which are in the word but in the wrong place, and which are not in the word at all. Winning in few tries is about collecting the most information from every guess.

Choose a strong first word

Your first guess is made with no information, so it should test the letters that appear most often. In English these include E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N. A good first word uses five different letters from that group and includes two or three vowels. Avoid words with a repeated letter at the start, because a repeat tests one letter fewer.

Use a second word that is completely different

If the first guess gives you little, do not try to rescue it. Play a second word made of five new common letters. After two guesses you will have tested ten letters, and most hidden words will have given up several of them.

Respect what you have learned

A letter marked as being in the wrong place tells you two things: it is in the word, and it is not in that position. Many wasted guesses put a letter back where it has already been ruled out. Before you enter a word, check it against every earlier result.

Think about positions

Letters have favourite places. In English, S often starts a word, E and Y often end one, and vowels are common in the second and third positions. When you know a letter is in the word but not where, try its most common remaining position first.

Watch for the one-letter trap

Sometimes you know four letters and the last one could be any of five or six. Guessing them one at a time can use up all your tries. Instead, play a word that contains several of the possible letters at once, even though it cannot be the answer. One guess then tells you which ending is right.

Remember repeated letters

A word can use the same letter twice. If nothing seems to fit, consider a double letter.

Playing in another language

The same ideas apply in any language, but the common letters change. In Arabic, for example, letters such as alif, lam, ya, mim and waw appear very often, so a good first word uses several of them.

Build a streak without stress

A daily puzzle is meant to be a short, pleasant habit. Take your time with each guess. A slow, careful fourth try is better than a quick, careless sixth.
